An Introduction to Kajang

Kajang

Introduction

Kajang is made the district capital of Hulu Langat because of its central location. It is a town located on the eastern part of Selangor, Malaysia. Kajang is situated nearby popular areas such as Cheras, Serdang and Kuala Lumpur, which is about 21 kms away from Kajang. A SILK expressway enables easy access to new townships that have been growing rapidly in this booming town.

A brief look into the history of Kajang shows that the first settlement was established there in 1709, but Kajang was founded after the Klang War in 1807. Kajang town became modernised with increasing commercialization after coffee estates were opened up around the area in the 1890s by rubber estate owners.

Population and Residential Areas

With a population of over 530,000 people and an estimated population growth of 9% per annum, Kajang has become one of the most popular residential areas in Selangor. There are existing old housing areas around Sungai Chua, Semenyih, Kajang Utama, Sg.Ramal, Sg.Sekamat and Sg.Jelok.

With the population growth, naturally, there has been an increase in housing developments to satisfy the demand of young buyers as well as those from nearby areas. The famous housing area, Taman Bukit Mewah has been expanded up to Phase 10 and new developments have emerged. For instance, Kajang 2, Taman Prima Saujana and Taman Kajang Perdana.

High-end developments have also been on the rise in Kajang town in recent years. A few examples include Ridgeview, Twin Palms, Sri Banyan and Jade Hills.

Transportation

It is convenient to get around places in Kajang, and to Kuala Lumpur, as there are various transportation means such as bus stations in the town centre and Kompleks Perhentian Kajang (where buses run from Kajang to Kuala Lumpur, as well as within the Kajang vicinity), KTM commuter station near Jalan Bukit and taxi stands around town.

Facilities and Amenities

Kajang is equipped with a local police station, Kajang prison, fire station, medical centres (i.e. Hospital Kajang, KPJ Kajang Specialist Centre, Kajang Plaza Medical Centre), 24-hour clinics and hypermarkets such as Billion Bandar Teknologi, Giant and Tesco Saujana Impian.

Kajang has several primary schools such as SK Convent Kajang, SK Jalan Bukit, SK Jalan Semenyih, SK Kajang, SK Kantan Permai, SJK (C) Yu Hua and SJK (T) Kajang. For secondary schools, there are SMK Convent Kajang, SMK Jalan Bukit, SMK Tinggi Kajang (Kajang High School), SMJK Yu Hua, SMK Kajang Utama, SMK Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (SAAS), SMK Jalan Reko and SMK Maah Hamidiah.

In addition, there are also higher learning institutions located in Kajang and its surroundings such as New Era College, and its surrounding areas such as University of Nottingham Malaysia (Semenyih), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (Bangi), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Sg.Long), UNITEN (Putrajaya) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (Serdang).

Local Attractions and Tourism

Kajang is well-known as Malaysia’s Satay Town, where the most famous places to eat satay, a form of skewered barbecue meat, include Restoran Malaysia and Haji Samuri. There is also an open-air restaurant in the condominium located on the hill of Bukit Mewah that serves reasonably priced local and western delights, with a wonderful ambience (you can have a clear view of Kajang town as well as the sight of KL Tower and KL Twin Tower at night), making it a fitting place to hang out with family and friends.

There are many other food spots around Kajang town such as the 99 Food Court that serves a variety of food from the local favourite nasi lemak to Penang’s “lobak”, fast food restaurants like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut as well as kopitiams such as Old Town and the new Pappa Rich outlet.

There are also shopping complexes such as Metro Plaza and Metro Point in Kajang, as well as Aeon Cheras Selatan and South City Plaza in the nearby areas, equipped with retail outlets, cinema, bowling alley and karaoke for those who seek shopping and entertainment.

Accommodation is not a problem as Kajang has hotels around the centre of the town, for example Prescott Metro Inn Hotel, Oriental Crystal Hotel, Uptown Hotel, New City Hotel and more.

In the heart of town, there is Stadium Kajang which is used for community football matches and sports events throughout the year; and Masjid Kajang, a mosque painted in bright yellow that is lively with its Islamic activities. There are also Chinese and Indian temples around Kajang town to cater to the various racial groups residing there.
