An Introduction to Klang
Klang
INTRODUCTION
Klang district consists of two mukims (sub-districts): Klang and Kapar. It covers a land area of 626.78 sq km, with a 53.75 km coastline. It is bordered by Kuala Selangor district to the north, Petaling district to the east, and Kuala Langat to the south. The district includes several islands, namely Pulau Ketam, Pulau Kelang, Pulau Selat Kering, Pulau Selat Gedung, Pulau Che Mat Zin and Pulau Indah.
Klang town, located 32 km southwest of Kuala Lumpur is the royal town of the state of Selangor. It is also one of the main gateways to Malaysia via sea. Prior to the emergence of Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam, Klang was the capital of Selangor.
Port Klang, Malaysia’s premier port and the region’s transshipment hub is located 6 km to the southwest of Klang town. The port’s progressive development has enormously contributed to the strong growth of the state’s and nation’s economy.
Separated by the Klang River, the district is divided into North Klang and South Klang.
North Klang used to be the main commercial centre, but the surge in residential and commercial projects as well as government offices developed in the South meant that the latter is far busier and has become the centre of social and recreational activities. New and modern townships such as Bandar Botanic, Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Taman Bayu Perdana, Glenmarie Cove and Kota Bayuemas – all located within South Klang, triggered this shift.
Some of the older and established residential areas in the northern part of this royal town include Taman Eng Ann, Taman Klang Utama, Berkeley Garden and Bandar Baru Klang. Newer townships include Bandar Bukit Raja, Aman Perdana and Klang Sentral.
The majority of the district falls under the jurisdiction of Majlis Perbandaran Klang (MPK), while the city council of Shah Alam, exercises some jurisdiction over other parts of the district (known as Shah Alam Selatan).
ACCESSIBILITY
Klang is well connected to the rest of the Klang Valley via the Federal Highway, the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), the North Klang Straits Bypass as well as the KESAS Highway. Coastal roads from Banting and Sepang or Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam can also be used to get to Klang.
The main roads that link Port Klang town, Southport and the housing areas are Persiaran Raja Muda Musa and Jalan Pelabuhan Utara.
Pulau Indah, home to the Port Klang Cruise Centre, Westport and Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) is accessible by road via the Pulau Indah Expressway which is connected to the KESAS Highway. By 2012, Pulau Indah will be directly connected to Putrajaya, Malaysia's administrative capital, via the South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE).
KTM Komuter is an electric train that links Klang to Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and other parts of the Klang Valley. Stations serving Klang residents include Bukit Badak,Klang, Teluk Pulai, Teluk Gadong, Kampung Raja Uda, Jalan Kastam and Port Klang.
Klang Sentral is a transport terminal for local and intercity bus and taxi services. It is located nearby Setia Alam and Aman Perdana townships, about 9 km away from the town centre. It drew controversies due to its inconvenient location, causing passengers higher transportation costs and longer commuting time.
Port Klang houses a passenger ferry terminal to Pulau Ketam and an international terminal, called the Passenger Cruise Terminal at Southpoint to Tanjung Balai Asahan and Dumai in Sumatra, Indonesia. The Star Cruise Terminal is located at Pulau Indah, adjacent to the cargo terminal of West Port.
