The little known danger lurking behind your walls: substandard cables
We hardly think about them but behind every wall at home...

We hardly think about them but behind every wall at home, an office or a building in general, there are cables that channel electricity for our daily consumption. These are housing cables and they connect all electricity-powered items and sockets to the main electricity source.

Most Malaysians pay little attention to the kind of cables that wire their homes. This is a huge mistake as there have been many documented incidences of fire, blackouts, short circuits and even electrocution caused by unsafe cables.

These cables are called substandard cables – they are not designed, manufactured or test-approved to meet the requirements in safety standards. The market is flooded with them due to unscrupulous manufacturers who compromise on quality and safety just to produce cheaper cables.

To protect your home and family from electrical shock and fire hazards, you need to choose safety-assured housing cables.

Cables should be made of 100% copper conductor, which is actually the most suitable and cost-effective form of metal for housing cables. As they need to safely carry electrical current, cables should have sufficient amount of insulation and high grade protective layers made of PVC. They should have superior insulation capabilities, withstanding temperatures of up to 70˚C. They should also have strong resistance to oils and chemicals.

Universal Cable has launched UniHome Housing Cables, a premium quality and safety-assured cable for residential and commercial use. It uses 100% copper conductor and is insulated with high-grade PVC. As it meets international standards and guidelines, UniHome is certified by both SIRIM and Suruhanjaya Tenaga

Universal Cable has been around for 44 years and they are now the single largest cable and wire manufacturer in Malaysia and the Asean region. They are fully-equipped to manufacture cables and wires for many different industries, including oil& gas, telecommunication as well as commercial and housing developments.

Their portfolio also includes cables for instrumentation and for distribution of electricity from main power generators all the way to the electricity sockets we use on a daily basis.

Whether for heavy industries or home, each Universal Cable product is made with genuine material, and has been stringently-tested for quality and safety. This has earned them many certifications from local and international authorities. Their operations have since expanded from their first manufacturing plant in Tampoi, Johor to three others in Pandan, Plentong and Nilai.
