Commentary:
It doesn’t come as a surprise that most respondents (75%) prefer to take the MRT to work. With prices of petrol and other goods on a rising trend, most people would want to save whenever they can.
With prices of land on the uptrend as well, parking prices in the city centre are not exactly cheap. Average parking price is RM7 per day or more for private parking while government parking charges about RM1 per hour if you are lucky to find one. Hotel parking averages RM8 per day if you are there for a function.
Thus, assuming the destination is also near another MRT station, it makes sense to take the MRT. It’s cost-efficient, environmentally friendly and the best thing is there are no traffic jams to contend with.
Some 10% or 83 respondents still prefer to drive – these die-hards are good news for car sellers. Otherwise, the auto industry might be adversely affected. Then again, since the MRT stations are (or supposed) to be located in low and middle-income areas, car consumption would not be affected in higher-end areas.
In conclusion, what we might see is more people leaving their cars at home. This will lead to less congestion on the roads, making KL a more liveable city.
