BACK TO BASICS

This issue, we share some simple Feng Shui elements to “enhance” the property you call home. As you may be aware, “Flying  Star” Feng Shui is a more advanced, powerful Feng Shui, as it encompasses the time dimension. But to practice Flying Star Feng Shui, you would need to determine the direction your house faces.

It is not easy to ascertain the direction of your house, but it is a very important aspect of this practice. If you get the direction wrong, the analysis could lead to more problems than solve them.

So, to practice Flying Star Feng Shui, I would recommend you get help from a professional Feng Shui consultant.

This issue, I would like to share how to use simpler Feng Shui to enhance your house.

The Entrance

Let’s start with the main door. It is one of the most important items in the practice of Feng Shui for homes. You would need to ensure that it is not “afflicted”; in that the Qi that enters through the main door is not affected. If the main door is afflicted, it could change good Qi into bad Qi.

A common problem in Malaysia – especially in two-storey link houses – is that a bathroom for one of the rooms upstairs is often located right above the main door. As the main door is where Qi enters the house, it could become “dirty” when it passes below the restroom.

If you have this problem, it would be difficult and costly to relocate the bathroom. The alternative is to relocate the main door towards the middle of the front. In fact, for Period 8 houses, the “Facing Palace” is an auspicious sector; having a door in this sector could help enhance the Feng Shui of the house. If you are unable to relocate the door or the bathroom, you could place a light that shines upwards. This could reduce the bad effects brought about by the bathroom.

The other thing you would need to determine is whether there are “poison arrows” at the main door. A poison arrow could be a lamp post or tree. The nearer the obstruction, the worse the effect could be.

It is best to relocate such poison arrows. If that is impossible, again, you may need to relocate the door. Alternatively, if there is space between the door and the poison arrow, you could place a water fountain to reduce the negative effects of the arrow.
Some interior designers fancy placing a mirror adjacent to the main door. According to them, the mirror creates a sense of additional space in the foyer. Although this is good, placing a mirror directly in front of the main door could reflect incoming Qi. A mirror could in fact “chase away” good Qi from the house. In this case, place the mirror on a side wall that does not face the main door; this way you could still get the same effect of creating additional space and satisfy the Feng Shui requirement.

In the same context, it would be bad to have the back door face the main door. If you are able to see the back door from the front, this could be likened to “wealth in, wealth out”. The Qi that enters the main door would immediately flow out the back door. To counter this affliction, you could relocate the back door so it would not face the main door. Otherwise, you could place some plants, furniture or a screen between the two doors. The idea is to have the Qi move around the house before it goes out the back door.

The Bedroom

Let’s look at the bedroom. This is an important sector as far as Feng Shui is concerned, because it is a place an owner spends time in.

The most common affliction in the bedroom is the position of the bed. Aside from using “Eight Mansion” Feng Shui to determine the auspicious direction of a bed, you would need to ensure that the room and bathroom doors do not face the bed – either directly in front or facing the side of the bed. This is because the door is an opening where Qi could enter the room.

If the bed is located right in front of the door, the Qi would act as a poison arrow that cuts through the bed. If you are unable to shift the bed, the next best thing to do is to hang a door curtain to block the door from the bed.

On the other hand, the bathroom is considered a dirty place. Dirty Qi from here would flow directly to the bed, which could affect the health of the occupant. So, it is not good if the bathroom door directly faces the bed. The best is to have a walk-in wardrobe that could “hide” the toilet. In any case, it is good to ensure that the toilet door is closed at all times.

It is also considered inauspicious to have the bed head next to a window. If you do so, the people who sleep on this bed would not have support or could fall sick easily. It is better to have a solid wall behind the bed head. The other thing that you would need to check is to make sure the bed head does not share the same wall with the toilet. There should not be a toilet behind the bed head. For a small room or for those living in a condominium, sometimes space constraints may not permit you to have the best arrangement. If there is no other direction that you could locate your bed and the bed head has to share a wall with the toilet, I would suggest building a dry wall between the wall and the bed head. This way, the bed head would not be sharing the same wall as the toilet. This is one of the simplest and cheapest methods to overcome the problem.

For married couples, you would need to ensure that there is no mirror that could reflect the bed. This can create marriage problems Even a TV screen could act as a mirror when turned off. If you need to place a TV in the room, cover it with a piece of cloth when turned off. The same goes for the wardrobe. There are many wardrobe designs that use glass as the door panel for the wardrobe. The glass could also reflect the bed. Use a wooden panel instead.

Another common problem creator in the bedroom is down lights. Though they are very common these days, they are a Feng Shui taboo. Down lights can create poison arrows, so try to ensure there are no light fittings above the bed.

Do remember not to place plants, flowers, a water feature or an aquarium in the bedroom. These can affect the occupants, especially married couples.

Many married couples like to hang their wedding photo on the wall above the bed head. This too is taboo, as it could create pressure for the photo or painting to “fall” on you. The best place to hang a wedding photo is the south-west sector. I have mentioned that the southwest is the Love Sector; placing a wedding photo here would enhance your relationship.

The other important sector is the kitchen. Do ensure that you don’t have your kitchen’s ‘fire’ clash with ‘water’. A stove, oven and microwave oven are fire elements, while the wash basin, fridge and washing machine represent water. The worst is to have a fire element directly opposite a water element. This is called ‘Direct Clash’. The second worst clash is to have the water and fire elements side by side less than two-feet gap between them.
