Macallum Street is one of the roads in the working class neighbourhood after the Prangin Canal in George Town. It was created in the area which was called Koay Kanga ("Across the River"), and was known in Hokkien as Goh Tiau Lor (in full, Goh Tiau Lor Koay Kanga), meaning "The 5th Road (Across the River)".
Macallum Street was named after the engineer of the Straits Settlement between 1884-1889. It is within the working class neighbourhood known as the Seven Streets Precinct.
