The house, inspired by a prominent Malaysian architect, is functionally designed as a Tropical House. This climate responsive design concept is aimed at mitigating the humidity and discomfort in the tropics by stimulating natural flow of air. Incorporating these principles, the house is built around a central courtyard, employing an open plan concept. These principles, translated into the house design, minimises heat absorption and maximises natural ventilation, hence cooling the house perfectly. Priority is accorded to comfort and space in each built area. The house is built on two levels, with the front public portion being elevated, simulates a traditional Malay house. The higher elevation is designed to capture the prevailing breeze. Private areas of the house comprising the bedrooms and family lounge are built at a lower level, away from the public spaces, and the harsh evening sun. A cantilever roof design expels the build up of hot air in the ceiling with heavy clay tiles, minimising heat absorption. The south west facing warp around front wall is double layered to minimise heat penetration in the evening. The courtyard has a water feature, which is designed as a fish pond, as well as to further cools the house. The house, Malay-Malacca-Balinese in looks has all the luxuries of a modern home.
